Established February 2006 in Bombay by Usha Mirchandani and Ranjana Steinruecke, Galerie Mirchandani + Steinruecke presents contemporary Indian art by emerging and mid-career artists – the forms comprising painting, drawing, sculpture, textile-based art, collage, photography and video. Alongside the artists of the gallery who have been acknowledged for brilliance in the media of their choice – amongst them Jyothi Basu, Aji V. N., Kanishka Raja, Abir Karmakar, Ratheesh T., Tejal Shah and Manish Nai – we have also presented key international positions through the work of Kiki Smith, Jonathan Meese, Juul Kraijer, Dayanita Singh, Polly Apfelbaum and Eva and Franco Mattes (aka 0100101110101101.ORG).
Curatorial projects by Mirchandani and Steinruecke prior to the launch of the gallery include ‘The Artist Lives and Works’ at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin in 2005, ‘Bhupen Khakhar: A Retrospective’ at the National Gallery of Modern Art in Bombay in 2003, and the art collections for the Deutsche Bank in India. During the years 1997 to 2003 they ran a space in Berlin for contemporary art from India organizing solo exhibitions with Atul Dodiya, Bhupen Khakhar, Jogen Chowdhury, M.F. Husain and S.H. Raza.
Upcoming Bombay debuts by young talent include Sosa Joseph, Varunika Saraf, Ranjith Raman and Vinod Balak.
