INTRODUCTION

Through the reading of Zen and Sufi philosophy, Raman's work took on a new dimension. The image became mystical and tranquil – its essence recurring, its representation / forms changing. "I believe that each of the works I create, or rather the process of creating them, is an attempt to understand or an act of reaching out – rather than to treat a specific subject or embody a particular message."

Working in the medium of textile has been a natural extension of Raman's evolving personal philosophy. It was while living in Ahmedabad working at the Kanoria Centre for Arts (1997-98) and staying on in the city for six years that he re-discovered his childhood passion for needlework. Wandering through the streets almost unconsciously absorbing the vibrant textile culture of the city and spending hours at the Calico Textile Museum, something about the tactile quality of the material captured his imagination. In 2003, he began working with textile and silk thread as an extension of his work in acrylic paint, combining stitches with brushstrokes. Since then, the use of paint has slowly vanished. In a way, embroidery serves as an outlet for his obsession with intricate detail. Each stitch is part of an evolving continuity, connecting one moment with the next.
